AIFU Self-Audit - Guidance for companies

The AIFU Self-Audit helps companies to realistically assess their use of artificial intelligence (AI). The aim is to create transparency: How much added value is created by AI, and to what extent do humans remain involved as a controlling and shaping entity?

1. Aim and basic idea

The self-audit enables companies of all sizes to carry out a simple self-assessment of their use of AI. It determines the extent to which processes, services or products are based on AI. The result is displayed as a score (0-100 points) and as a label (Gold, Silver, Basic).

2 How the self-audit works

  1. Open the self-audit form on the website -> https://ai-fair-use.org/selfaudit
  2. Enter your company details (company name, contact, telephone, country).
  3. Evaluate six core areas (AIFU KPIs) with values from 0 to 100.
  4. The system automatically calculates your score and displays a preliminary label.
  5. Send the form. Your entry will be saved and checked in the backend.
  6. After confirmation you will receive the official AIFU label and certificate sent to the e-mail address provided.

3. The six AIFU KPIs

AI-Input-Quote (AI-IQ)

To what extent are your company processes automated or supported by AI? Example: AI supported accounting software counts here too. 100 points means: almost complete automation.

AI-Output-Quote (AI-OQ)

How much of your turnover comes from AI-generated services or products? Example: 60% of your turnover comes from AI services → value 60.

Human Oversight Index (HOI)

How much do humans check or control AI results? If every decision is approved by a human, the value is 100.

Transition Rate (TR)

How many employees will be trained or transferred instead of replaced in the course of introducing AI? A high value stands for social balance and responsibility.

Provenance Score (PS)

How traceable are AI results? Do you use watermarks, audit trails or labelling for AI-generated content?

Compliance Score (CS)

How well does your company fulfil legal and ethical standards - e.g. GDPR, AI Act or internal guidelines on the fair use of AI?

4. Evaluation and interpretation

The system automatically calculates your overall score. This allows you to categorise your position in the AI Fair Use Index:

  • Gold - Strongly human-centred, AI provides support (score ≥ 75)
  • Silver - Balanced ratio of AI and human control (score 50-74)
  • Basic - Clearly AI-driven, but with human supervision (score 25-49)
  • No-Label - AI dominates, human control low (score < 25)

5. Practical tips for small businesses

  • Be honest - the aim is transparency, not evaluation.
  • Estimate values if exact figures are missing.
  • Start with conservative assumptions and adjust later.
  • Involve employees in the assessment.
  • Save your self-audit as a PDF - so you can see changes over time.

6. After the self-audit

After submitting your self-audit, the entry is saved in the AIFU system. We will check your entry and issue an official certificate. You may also use the label (Basic, Silver, Gold) according to your score on your homepage or your products. We will send both to your registered e-mail account.

Consumers can check the validity of the label and certificate by scanning the QR code contained in the label. The system enables consumers to make an informed and ethical purchasing decision.

It is recommended that the self-audit be repeated annually in order to document progress and changes in the use of AI.
